Your First Visit to an Osteopath

Your first visit to an osteopathYour first visit to an Osteopath need not be daunting.

We’ll discuss your problem with you and get to know you as an individual through enquiring about things like occupation and lifestyle. We will also take a medical history to inform us about your general health.

The next step is a full structural examination of your body from head to toe so all possible causes of a problem are considered. This includes an assessment of whole body patterns in familiar resting and sitting postures which can offer surprising insight into the biomechanics of the body. Other more medical examinations may also be necessary, such as measuring blood pressure, listening to the lungs or testing spinal reflexes.

Tim Goullet - Osteopath, The Chelsea Osteopathic PracticeWe can then give you a diagnosis of your condition and explain how this is best treated and approximately how many treatments you will require. This prognosis is dependent upon many factors, such as how long you have had the problem, your general health and your lifestyle. Usually, we make a significant improvement within 4-5 treatments, although complicated or long standing conditions may take significantly longer.

While we endeavour to commence some treatment on your first visit, this may not always be possible in complex cases.

We will also give you some advice as to how best to help us in dealing with your condition between visits, such as hydrotherapy (use of hot/cold packs), exercise therapy or dietary modifications.
